Winemaking: manual harvesting of the overripe grape in 20-kg perforated crates through a careful selection of the bunches. Transfer
in cellar within hours, grape crushing and destemming, and 15% must bleeding. Themo-controlled fermentation at 34 °C, with often and soft pumpovers. Long maceration of the marcs (about 350 hours); racking
in barriques, where the natural malolactic fermentation takes place.
Critic's notes: The 2013 Barolo Albarella is striking. Freshly cut flowers, rose petals, violets, mint and hard candy give the 2013 its chiseled, vibrant personality. Tasted from cask prior to bottling, the 2013 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. I am especially struck by the wine's pure energy. The Albarella displays a slightly darker fruit profile and more nervous tannins than the Rocche. Both are shaping up to be jewels. Feb 2017, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2019-2033
